Vidal Mouet pulls inspiration from his everyday life to create mind-bending abstract works, pushing the limits of traditional ‘painting’.

Mouet, a Mexican artist currently living and working in New York City, works exclusively with canvas, stretch bars, oil colors, and space to create referential forms and shapes. Inspired by how commonplace items interact with the space that they inhabit, Mouet reinterprets ordinary forms like stacked coffee cups, sheets of cardboard, or the circle of a ceiling speaker through the rectangle of the canvas.  Despite operating within a classic painting vocabulary, Mouet’s work prompts the viewer to question what it is they are seeing as they engage with each piece.

Mouet received a BFA from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2017 and an MFA from Pratt Institute in 2025. While at Pratt, Mouet was awarded the 2024 Graduate Student Engagement Fund. Mouet’s work has been exhibited bicoastally, with selected solo exhibitions at Hanson Space (2021) and Echo Gallery (2022) in Los Angeles, as well as at Pulse Projects in New York (2025). Mouet’s work has also been featured in group exhibitions at Doyena in Los Angeles (2022), Dekalb Gallery (2023), theBlanc (2024), and Beyond Art (2024) in New York, and at Chilli Art Projects in London (2024).
