Fırat Neziroğlu derives inspiration from modern experiences of his everyday life while remaining grounded in traditional techniques of the past. His works pay homage to everyday people and objects Neziroğlu surrounds himself with, while remaining informed by the harsher realities of lived experience.
Born in İzmir, Turkey in 1987, Fırat Neziroğlu received his Bachelor in Fine Arts from the Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Fine Arts in İzmir, Turkey in 2000. He went on to receive a Master’s in Fine Arts and a Proficiency in Art doctoral degree from the same institution in 2007. While working on his degrees in textile and fashion design, Neziroğlu held his first exhibitions in Turkey including solo exhibitions at Başak Insurance Art Gallery in İzmir (2000, 2002) and group exhibitions at Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Fine Arts Art Gallery (2004). He has exhibited widely in Turkey, notably in shows at Anna Laudel (2022), Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (2022), St Regis Hotel (2019), Nazım Hikmet Cultural Center (2018), The House Residence (2016), and CDA Projects (2011), and has been recognized globally. Neziroğlu has shown works at The Main Gallery in Adelaide, Australia (2021), La Triennale di Milano in Milan, Italy (2017), A-Part Art Festival in Paris, France (2015), Royal Embassy in Oslo, Norway (2013), Victoria House in London, UK (2013), Marrakech Art Fair in Morocco (2012), and International Art Exchange Exhibition in Incheon, Korea (2009). In 2022 he also received a special invitation from the Kingdom of Sweden to display his works, in 2018 he was invited to London to weave a portrait of the Queen of the United Kingdom for her birthday, in 2017 was invited to Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to weave a work of art, in 2016 was Invited to Thailand to celebrate the Queen of Thailand's birthday to weave a special fabric included in her private collection, and in 2013 was invited to Oslo to weave a special piece of art under the auspices of the Royal Norwegian Embassy. His work has also been featured in multiple auction houses including Sotheby’s and Christie’s.
Characterized by bold colors, light illusions, and his own unique weaving techniques, Neziroğlu has created a niche in contemporary art utterly his own. Paying tribute to traditional weaving techniques, Neziroğlu works with rigorous discipline focused on technical execution, while incorporating modern elements and imagery to redefine his medium in contemporary art. By creating a woven framework out of fishing line, Neziroğlu incorporates negative space throughout his designs. In challenging himself as an artist, this technique surpasses the expectations of traditional ‘kilim’ compositions in Anatolian weaving while paying respect to this old and significant art form. In refining his practice, Neziroğlu has found a way to incorporate shadow and light into an often flat aesthetic medium.
