MARIE TOMANOVA CZECH REPUBLIC, b. 1984
BIOGRAPHY
Marie Tomanova is internationally recognized for her series of portraits of young New Yorkers, documented in two monographs, Young American, and New York New York. She was born and raised in Mikulov, a small border town in the Czech Republic, where she earned a master's degree in painting. Moving to the United States and ultimately New York City, she discovered photography, the medium that would allow her to channel her creative spirit into a whole new direction. Using a point-and-shoot camera, she developed an up-close-and-personal style that specifically dovetailed with her goal of building friendships. Her candid photos, shot on film with no subsequent manipulation, are a natural expression of these relationships. The intimacy of her connection with her subjects is apparent in the tender, vulnerable moments she captures on film. More recently, she has returned to the self-portraiture and documentation of her hometown that marked her earlier evolution.
