Commuters recreates a New York City subway car in miniature using a custom LCD screen housed in a UV-printed aluminum shell to run a 22-minute loop of New Yorkers boarding, riding, and existing. The car fills gradually, as it always does, until the familiar compression of rush hour sets in. The subway car becomes a theatrical stage, and its passengers a cast of characters whose silent interactions, glances, and studied indifference tell the whole story of city life. Exaggerated just enough to feel like performance, Commuters is an affectionate and sharply observed portrait of the shared experience of going nowhere together — until, suddenly, everyone is gone.
