Women and Children First is a collection of plasma cut steel sculptures by Cal Lane, crocheted wool pieces by Patricia Waller, and large-scale monotypes by Marion Fink. Using multiple mediums, the works explore the complex nuances of gender and the violent forces that directly impact women and children.

Patricia Waller’s work references the ongoing presence of children as front line victims of war and societal violence. The Chilean-born, Berlin-based artist is known for her handcrafted objects that subvert the domesticity and comfort traditionally associated with crocheting. With a decades-long career responding to the growing acceptance of global violence, she confronts this bloody reality with her depictions of children in fear, injured, mutilated, or conscripted into the service of wars they are too young to consent to or understand.

Canadian-born Putnam Valley, NY resident Cal Lane is best recognized for her steel works, into which she plasma cuts intricate, lace-like patterns. With her transformed ammunition boxes and oil drum, she explores the paradox of “masculine” materials and “feminine” patterns, while her Pantie Chain embodies the imprisoning quality of the often violent oversexualization of women.

In conversation with these sculptural pieces, Potsdam and Berlin-based artist Marion Fink’s portraits of young women floating in surreal landscapes conjure the type of existential soul searching exacerbated by modern debates about gender. Her pieces illustrate the dilemma of the female experience as it is filtered through the distorting lens of profit and technology driven media and online culture.

Through a repurposing of familiar objects, a subversion of material notions of hard and soft, and a juxtaposition of violent and dreamy imagery, Women and Children First provides an opportunity for dialogue as we attempt to find our balance in a rapidly changing world.
