BIOGRAPHY
Tommy Hartung’s work employs photography, sculpture and video to create films with a surrealist, DIY aesthetic. He combines computer-generated animation with stop motion photography of his own sculptures constructed from unconventional, often refuse materials, as well as found footage and film produced through analogue techniques using consumer technology. Constructing imaginative worlds with stream-of-consciousness-style storytelling, Hartung explores the creation and perpetuation of cultural narratives, examining themes of religion, colonialism, obsession, violence, war, modernism, and mysticism. Pushing the limits of the moving image, Hartung’s work utilizes allegory and archetype to tackle greater societal issues.
