Born in Akron, Ohio in 1979, Hartung received his MFA from Columbia University and currently lives and works in Queens, New York.

Tommy Hartung has exhibited at Museums throughout the United States, including most recently The Whitney Museum’s Whitney Biennial 2017, curated by Christopher Y. Lew and Mia Locks; The Rose Museum, Waltham MA; The Jewish Museum, New York, NY and MoMa PS1, Queens, New York.

Employing photography, sculpture and video, Hartung's work addresses topics such as the Bible and the history of colonialism—with a surrealist DIY aesthetic, through stream of consciousness storytelling. The imagery he creates mirrors a globalized world steeped in obsession, violence and sympathetic magic. His use of multiple media, addresses the themes of modernism, and forms hybrids of classical characters and nuanced allegory.

Hartung was the recipient of the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Biennial Award in 2015 and the Painters and Sculptors Grant from the Joan Mitchell Foundation in 2011. Tommy Hartung will have his debut solo exhibition at C24 Gallery in May 2018.
