NILBAR Güreş

b. 1977, Istanbul, Turkey

Lives and works in Vienna, Austria and Istanbul, Turkey

Nilbar Güreş chooses a performative approach for her works, using photography, collage, drawing and video: she places everyday life realities in theatrical settings which deal with cultural identity codes, especially female or queer. The narrative presentation often depicts an exit strategy in a humorous way, without denying the brutal reality. Her work is based on long-term research and cultural observation by employing fieldwork practices; she lives with her protagonists and experiences their environment. The issues at stake always deal with a strong political standpoint and oppressing limitations of life which include sexims, violence and gender inequality.

Nilbar Güreş has exhibited at museums internationally including The Istanbul Museum of Modern Art, Istanbul, Turkey; Schwules Museum, Berlin, Germany; Malmö Konstmuseum, Malmö, Sweden; National Museum of Contemporary Art, Lisbon, Portugal; Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, Porto, Portugal; Guangdong Times Museum, Guangzhou, China; Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Strasbourg, France. Selected exhibitions include the 20th Biennale of Sydney, Cockatoo Island, Australia (2016); Artspace Auckland (2015); SeMa Biennale Mediacity Seoul (2014); EVA International Ireland’s Biennial, Limerick City (2014); The 31. Bienal de Sao Paulo (2014); MAK, Vienna (2013); 6th Berlin Biennial (2010); Secession Vienna (2010); and 11th International İstanbul Biennial (2009).

Güres is the recipient of the 2018 De’Longhi Art Projects Artist Award. She received the Hilde Goldschmidt Prize in 2013, the Otto Mauer Award of 2014 and Fifth edition of the BC21 (Belvedere Contemporary) Art Award 2015 in Austria. Güres completed residencies at the Lutetia Building, FAAP’s Artistic Residence Program, São Paulo in 2014; International Studio & Curatorial Program in New York, supported by the Austrian Government in 2012.

Her work can be found in the public collections of Jewish Museum, Berlin, Germany; Van Abbe Museum, Eindhoven, Netherlands; Museum der Moderne, Salzburg, Austria; Steldelijk Museum, Amersterdam, Netherlands, among many others.

Nilbar Güreş will have her debut solo exhibition at C24 Gallery in Spring, 2019.
